TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR REFORM

1. To acknowledge that we live in a holistic reality, that our economic system must reflect this, and that we are on an unsustainable path resulting from the current economic model.

2. To understand that wealth and prosperity include social and spiritual returns and environmental sustainability.

3. To shift to a new economic model that creates its money supply without the debt-interest perils of having banks do this, possibly taking a restrictive approach to usury.

4. To introduce a new way of measuring the well-being of economies that rates them on sustainability efficiencies.

5. To include in addition to the kinds of social and spiritual returns mentioned on page 117 also an index of self-responsibility and self-reliance since people are happiest when providing for themselves.

6. To reorganize corporations into smaller units to avoid the “too big to fail” scenario experienced during the Great Recession of 2008—perhaps along the lines of Germany’s “lean and efficient” family corporations, which, in certain circumstances, can be brought under a single mantle so that they can cooperate as if they were a large corporation to achieve specific objectives.

7. To continue to promote investment in lasting assets such as clean low-carbon technologies, good quality housing, efficient transport systems, public buildings, and open spaces.

8. To overhaul capital markets and their institutions to avoid the kind of unrestrained speculation in currencies, commodities, and financial derivatives that brought the financial system to the brink of collapse, including measures to instill higher morality into the system.

9. To encourage corporations through tax incentives and public recognition supported by forward-looking public policy to: (a) create more durable and easily recyclable products; (b) have carbon-efficient operations; and (c) utilize new social enterprises, such as B-corporations, which use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

10. To understand that when we have the data and knowledge to realize that the business-as-usual mind-set may seriously harm or even destroy the survival of our species, it is time for a new generation of enlightened leaders who understand the issues to inspire and implement.
